EDUCATION
with a purpose
Hey! I’m Melinda Kay!
Just so we’re on the same page, I’m real awkward with these “about me” kinds of things. So, if ya don’t mind, I’m gonna type just how I would if I were talking with you face to face… okay?? Here goes….
I’ve been a hairstylist in North Carolina for 20 years and an educator for 6 of those. It’s definitely been a wild ride, to say the least. I never even thought I’d like cosmetology school but I went because A: My mama suggested it, 2: I had no idea what I was gonna do with my life anyway so it seemed like a great time filler, and lastly, C: I got a financial aid check and ya girl was broke. Win-Win if ya ask me. Turns out, I didn’t suck at it and I fell in love with cosmetology. More than that, I’ve found my real passion being an educator. Specifically, a haircutting educator. In my opinion, which may not mean squat, the most challenging area for a hairstylist is cutting, especially short hair. Because challenges seem to love me just as much as I love them, I really wanted to figure out how to conquer short cuts. If I’m honest, it took some serious time and patience, that I really don’t have, to get comfortable with cutting short hair but I’m still growing and learning everyday. Bless my poor mama because she was my guinea pig for all of it. Some call me a “Short Hair Specialist” or “The Pixie Queen” but I’m just out here trynna give my best and help other hairstylists, honestly. Cutting education (esp. short hair) is rare unless there’s a sales tactic attached.
So now, I am presenting my own, independent haircutting education!!! I am absolutely thrilled but feel like I may throw up too. I do feel like I have something genuine to offer hairstylists. While I feel pretty confident in any cut, short hair is where I feel at home..like… in sweats, sans the bra, knowing no one is stopping by. Is haircutting complicated? No, it’s really not BUT I think that all of us can agree that we may have some difficulties because of A. the small amount of cutting education given to us in cosmetology school (dare I say none) and/or 2. a very limited availability of quality hair cutting education.
